Our clients liked a rustic, Restoration Hardware-inspired look, but this Newport Coast family home also needed a more tailored side. In the formal living room, a dark cork-like wallcovering with a velvet texture gives the ceiling weight without relying on unfinished wood. White custom tufted sofas brighten the room, while vintage aviation-style trunk furniture adds the character the clients enjoyed.

In the dining room, durable vinyl or leather makes the chairs practical for children, and contrasting fabric on the custom head chairs keeps the arrangement from feeling uniform. New family-room beams carry the rustic direction into the more casual parts of the home. The balance of dark texture, pale upholstery, and practical materials keeps the design refined without losing its relaxed character.
