Modernizing this Irvine home meant moving away from many of the darker, more traditional choices that had shaped the original interior. The primary bathroom changed dramatically: we removed several walls to open it up, then used a large glass shower, soaking tub, mirrored backsplash, and a quartz slab feature wall to bring more light and movement into the space. Gold-toned sconces and plumbing fixtures repeat throughout the lighter room.

We took the same contemporary direction into the kitchen, pairing painted perimeter cabinetry with a warmer brown island, quartzite countertops, and a custom-painted range hood detailed with brass straps. That warmer cabinetry color continues into the adjacent bar, helping the two spaces relate to one another.

The bar then takes on an identity of its own with a quartz stacked-stone wall and backlit onyx wrapping across the countertop, back, and down both sides of the cabinetry.
