The kitchen and family room in this Anaheim home presented an unusual space-planning challenge because of the many angles in the existing architecture. Our client wanted a stronger connection between the two spaces, but structural requirements and budget meant we could not simply remove everything between them. We opened the rooms as much as practical while retaining part of the wall and the opening around the bar.

Instead of leaving that structure as an awkward leftover, we used it to create a bar between the kitchen and family room. The remaining wall now gives each room some definition while still allowing the two spaces to function and read much more closely together.
